Sheffield Snooker Review - Snooker Training Centre in Kota Kinabalu

Last updated: 30 September 2026

Sheffield Snooker & Billiards is the only dedicated snooker training centre in Sabah and the most serious competitive venue in Kota Kinabalu's snooker scene. Located on the first floor of KK Taipan in Inanam, this centre focuses squarely on player development rather than casual entertainment. With four full-size steel block snooker tables, two 10-foot snooker tables, and eight pool tables, Sheffield offers the kind of table quality that competitive players in East Malaysia rarely get access to without travelling to Peninsular Malaysia.

Sheffield Snooker Tables and Equipment

The centrepiece of the venue is its four steel block cushion snooker tables, which represent the gold standard for competitive play. Steel block cushions provide more consistent ball response compared to the wooden block cushions found in most recreational halls. For players training for tournaments or working on their technique, this difference matters. The two additional 10-foot snooker tables offer a slightly smaller playing surface that can be useful for intermediate players building confidence before moving to full-size.

The eight pool tables round out the setup and cater to the larger pool-playing community in KK. While the snooker tables are the main draw for serious players, having pool available means groups with mixed preferences can visit together without anyone being left out. The overall table count of 14 makes Sheffield one of the larger venues in Sabah.

Free Youth Coaching at Sheffield Snooker

Sheffield's most distinctive offering is its free coaching programme for players under 21. This is genuinely rare in Malaysia. Most halls that offer coaching charge for it, and many do not offer structured instruction at all. The programme aligns with Sheffield's role as a training centre rather than a commercial hall, and it has contributed to developing several competitive players in the Sabah snooker circuit.

The venue has hosted SSBA (Sabah Snooker & Billiards Association) and MSN Sabah sanctioned events, and at least one SEA Games gold medallist has competed here. For young players in Sabah with competitive ambitions, Sheffield is the logical starting point. The coaching and competitive exposure available here would be difficult to replicate at any other venue in the state.

Smoke-Free Environment

Sheffield enforces a strict smoke-free policy throughout the entire venue. This is a meaningful differentiator in the Malaysian snooker hall landscape, where smoking is still permitted in many establishments. For non-smokers, families with younger players, and anyone who simply prefers clean air during a long practice session, the smoke-free environment is a significant plus. It also helps preserve the cloth and cushions, contributing to better table condition over time.

Location and Accessibility

KK Taipan in Inanam is approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Kota Kinabalu city centre. This suburban location means that Sheffield is not a spontaneous drop-in destination for most visitors. You will need your own transport or a ride-hailing service. The commercial centre has adequate parking, though it can fill up during peak hours.

The hours are generous: 10:30 AM to 2:00 AM daily. This gives working professionals plenty of evening time, and the late closing suits players who prefer quieter conditions after the evening rush. The early opening is also useful for daytime practice sessions, which is when you are most likely to find tables available.

Who Should Visit Sheffield Snooker

Sheffield is best suited for competitive and aspiring competitive players in Sabah. If you are serious about improving your game, the steel block tables and coaching programme make this the strongest option in the state. Young players under 21 should take advantage of the free coaching, which represents genuine value that is hard to find elsewhere in East Malaysia.

Casual players and beginners may find the atmosphere slightly more intense than a typical recreational hall. There is nothing unwelcoming about the venue, but the focus on training and competition means that the crowd tends to skew towards committed players. If you are looking for a more relaxed, social environment in KK, J Pool Snooker & Billiards or Eclipse Pool & Snooker may be better starting points.
